Day 6

When we pulled up to the lot today (at 6:45 PM - mind you), there was still lots of activity going on. I didn't get a picture of the massive truck in the driveway, or the pickup behind with the two guys taking a break, but did take one of the bobcat & backhoe at work. Fuz was intrigued by the goings-on, so we stood there and just watched them for quite some time. I also remembered to get a picture of the secondary, inner fence they installed inside of the orange safety fence. I think it went up some time last week? Can't remember.

I'm trying out the "photo gallery" feature this time, so if you click on an image, you'll see the caption with the full sized image. Tomorrow I plan to try out the "slideshow" feature. We're also sending an e-mail right now to the phase inspector we'd like to use, so hopefully he can get started ASAP and we can cross that task off our list.

I could say one good thing about your construction team... they work fast! Way faster than Trinidad construction team. And are they going to use the growing pile of dirt to pack into the foundation or it is entirely poured concrete? I always like high foundation just simply because the house can't get flooded out. LOL! Toco house is on a very high foundation so I love your house already!

LOL, well, housing is not really booming here right now, so they have more time to dedicate to each house :)

The foundation will be entirely poured concrete - here they're not allowed to use excavated dirt to back fill - since no one is sure about the composition of the dirt, and the foundation is engineered specifically for high clay soils.

That's a good point about the flooding though!

So what is going to happen with the growing pile of dirt then? I never really consider what happens if that dirt is not used.

And are basements typical in houses in your area? I always wondered about that because I keep thinking about what if the house have a basement and then the rains comes for 40 days and 40 nights? (I mean, we have other problems if that happens, but I digress) LOL, your project is very interesting for me since I don't have a construction project to keep an idea on at home as of this moment although there is one coming up soon, sometime in Summer.

It's funny you should ask about the dirt, because we're wondering too. It just keeps getting bigger, and we sure don't want it! I know they will use some of it to backfill close to the house, so that water will drain away from the house when they're done. I have no idea what happens to the rest. We gave the logs (from the trees they cut down) to our neighbor, cos they have a fireplace, and they're always chopping wood.

There are basements here, but they're not the most common. I'm guessing it's because of the clay and limestone, they would usually be a pain to build - but they would be nice to escape from the tornadoes! Basements can flood, and that never looks like fun on HGTV...
